On April 20-21, 2023 The University of Rome Foro Italico (Italy) hosted the EAS Executive Board. During the meeting, the cooperation of EAS with European Institutions consolidated in 2020-2023 have been summarized to provide a basis of the development of the 2023-2026 strategic plan to be discussed and approved by the General Assembly during the 2023 EAS Conference to be held in Gaeta, Italy next October 2-4, 2023.
The roles of three EAS Committees have been discussed. In particular, the EAS Scientific Committee Antonio Tessitore – UNIMED, Chair); Elena Conde, UCAM – Masar Gjaka, UBT) will foster dual career research and select the 2023 Bengt Nybelius Scholarship winners; of the EAS Communication Committee (Cristina Cortis – University of Cassino, Chaur; Piotr Rodak – Academy of Physical Education in Katowice, – Lotte Juhl – ESAA) will work to increase the visibility of the EAS Conference in the EAS website and social media; and the New Generation EAS Committee (Flavia Guidotti – University of Rome Foro Italico, Chair; Sara Seidl, University of Mannheim; Hakon Ege, Collins Innovation) will provide new ideas for the EAS Cafè and other activities.
The development of the ongoing European projects (BRAVA-DC, coordinated by the University of Limerick, Ireland; COMPATH, coordinated by Collective Innovation AS -COLINN, Norway; PARA-LIMITS, coordinated by UCAM, Spain; TALENT coordinated by the Center of Excellence of Split Dalmatia County, Croatia; and SPORTS AS VALUE coordinated by ENGSO, Sweden) and the application to six new proposals have been presented also in light of the new rules of the European Commission.
During a meeting with Prof. Cristina Cortis from the University of Cassino and Southern Lazio, the main aspects of the 2023 EAS Conference “Promoting Wellbeing in dual Career” and the cultural programme have been examined. Early registration fees (until August 1, 2023) will be 300 EUR for EAS Members and 450 EUR for non-members (including 150 EUR of 2023 EAS membership). After August 1, 2023, registration fees will be 400 EUR for EAS Members, and 550 EUR for not EAS members (including 150 EUR of EAS membership).
Save the date: the 10th EAS Cafè ““Dual career as European sports diplomacy beyond Europe” will be held on June 1, 2023.
The third Sport4Impact conference was held in Milan at 30 and 31 of March, under the designation “The role of finance and private sectors to design and scale up policies and programs for driving social change through sports”. The event was offered in a hybrid format, with 60 participants on the site and more than 100 remotely in a worldwide range.
During these two days was possible to present and discuss different perspectives how to use sport for a social transformation, having the contribution of European projects representatives and, as well, European and African institutions or organizations that were invited to participate.
The second day (March 31st) was fully dedicated to the financial approach to sport and physical activity initiatives based on a mix public and private resources, what is well identified in the rationale and scope of the Forum:
“Sports is growingly becoming a key lever for public bodies and private organizations to address a wide range of social needs. The role of finance and private sectors is more and more relevant in view of promoting a higher impact of programs fostered by the public sector at local, national and international level.
In the framework of the first Conference held in 2018 and of the second one held in 2021, the third Sport4Impact Conference will provide a dedicated environment to present recent evolutions, cases and tools and possible strategies elaborated by finance and private sectors, in order to facilitate networking and matching between finance and private operators on one side, and public bodies, sport organizations and practitioners on the other side. Special attention will be given to the FIT FOR LIFE Program promoted by UNESCO. The prevention and countering of relevant crimes in sports will be included in the conference agenda as a structural component and precondition for the appropriate and effective use of sports for social impact”.
EAS was invited to participate and was represented by António Figueiredo (Executive Commission member) who gave a contribution based on the mission and future perspectives of the EAS.
As we celebrate the 2023 Easter, the EAS Executive Committee expresses its deep appreciation to the Members of our Dual Career family for their commitment to help athletes, coaches, managers, and volunteers combining their sport and academic/work careers. This renewal time will fortify our common hope and collective efforts to reaffirm sports and education/work as fundamental rights to enrich the lives of sportspersons. We take advantage of this special occasion to update you on the most recent EAS activities.
Meeting future challenges
In the first months of 2023, the EAS Executive Committee started working at the at the 2023-2026 strategic plan and established three new Committees: New Generation EAS to be responsible of new ideas for the EAS Cafè and their organization; the Scientific EAS Committee to be responsible of fostering dual career research and selecting the Bengt Nybelius Scholarship winners (Antonio Tessitore – Chair; Lukas Linner Halmstad University, and Elena Conde, UCAM; and the EAS Communication Committee to be responsible of communication on the EAS website and social media.
The EAS Cafès
Organized at the end of February, the first EAS cafè of 2023 focused on “Dual Career from Education to Work: Human Right of the Sportsperson” and received a great appreciation. The next Cafè will be organized in May and will address the “Dual Career and Sport Diplomacy”.
European Projects
EAS is cooperating in the following ongoing ERASMUS+Sport projects and participated in several applications to the ERASMUS+Sport 2023 Call.
ELCAMP – Coordinated by Collective Innovation AS (Norway), on March 31 the ELCAMP completed its journey with a special course for international elite athletes in Ljubljana, Slovenia. The aims of the ELCAMP project have been to support athletes and Paralympic athletes to start, develop, implement, and scale their business ideas through an innovative entrepreneurship bootcamp curriculum. BRAVA-DC – Coordinated by the University of Limerick (Ireland), on February 20-22, 2023, for the first time the project partners have met in presence in Rome (Italy) to share the preliminary findings of the concept mapping for the development of dual career guidelines of the employee-sportspersons (e.g., athletes, coaches, referees, physical trainers, and sports managers). PARA-LIMITS – Coordinated by the Fundacion Universitaria San Antonio, on March 30 the project completed the preliminary administration of a innovative course curriculum for the supporting entourage of dual career of student-athletes with disabilities based on evidence and eminence knowledge. COMPATH – Coordinated by Collective Innovation AS (Norway), the project is progressing its journey towards the development of educational resources to touch both the careers and perspectives of young student-athletes by showing sports-oriented technology and 21st century skills, business world, entrepreneurship and different thinking and literacy methods, with the overall aim to launch the ”Digital Competence Hub on Sport Innovation” where young student/athletes will acquire the skills and competencies to increase their employability in the sports industry.
TALENT – Coordinated by the Center of Excellence of Split Dalmatia County (Croatia), following the kick off meeting organized on February 2-3 this project started it journey towards the creation of a cloud-based education for creative sport talents able to increase the awareness of the identification, the support, and the prevention of drop-out of talented youth through an integrated campaign involving teachers, parents and coaches.
SPORTS AS VALUE – Coordinated by ENGSO (Sweden) on March 30-31 the partners of this project participated in the kick-off meeting in Tirana (Albania) to build the capacity of Western Balkan sport clubs, organisations and federations to integrate positive values into the sport practice at the grassroots level. In a structured, dynamic and systematic way, the aim is to build strong communities and peaceful societies through sport and promotion of EU values in a historically fragmented region.
Build up academic research work in the field of dual career
The prestigious Editorial Dykinson (first quartile of the Scholarly Publishers Indicators) will publish a book on dual career and the 2022 EAS Conference. Contributions related to dual career research, new trends in dual career, European policies concerning dual career, dual career projects, and teaching, training, and mentoring student-athletes should include an abstract (150-200 words), 3-5 keywords, and a manuscript (5-12 pages) to be submitted by 24 April 2023 to easconference2022@ucam.edu
The 2023 Bengt Nybelius Scholarship
The call for applications for the 2023 Bengt Nybelius Scholarship has been posted on the EAS website. Before July 1, 2023, candidates up to 40 years of age have to submit an original manuscript as first author and their curriculum vitae to info@dualcareer.eu. The winner will have to summarize her/his work with a 15-minute oral presentation in English at the 2023 Annual EAS Conference in Gaeta, Italy, October 2-4. Cooperating with European Institutions in sport and education
Fruitful partnerships with the European Commission, the Council of Europe, the European FairPlay Movement, and Sport4Impact have been consolidated through the participation in relevant events organized onsite and online. On January 31, the European Commission invited EAS to contribute to the 2023 Erasmus+Sport Info Day in Brussels (Belgium). On March 31 EAS attended in Milan (Italy) the 3rd International conference of Sport4Impact on the role of finance and private sectors to design and scale up policies and programs for driving social change through sports. On April 24 the Council of Europe invited EAS to participate in Paris (France) to the technical meetings in preparation of an educational toolkit promoting the human rights of transgender and intersex athletes in sport, which will follow the dedicated webinar.

On March 30-31 the 2023, the kick-off meeting of the Erasmus+ funded project “Sport as Value”, coordinated by ENGSO in cooperation with the Olympic Committees of Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, Montenegro, the Confederacao do desporto de Portugal (PSC), The University of Pristina, the Organizzazione per L’educazione allo Sport (OPES), and EAS. During the next two years, Sports as Values aims to build the capacity of sport clubs, organizations and federations to integrate positive values into the sport practice at the grassroots level in a structured, dynamic and systematic way, as well as to build stronger communities and peaceful societies through sport and promotion of EU values in a historically fragmented region.
The project partners hope to create sustainable, long-lasting partnerships in the Balkan region, with skilled and knowledgeable organizers that will successfully promote the positive impact of grassroots sports and the values in sport which will result in stronger, peaceful, and more connected societies.
Following a research phase to gather knowledge on grassroots sports and good practices on promotion of values in and through sports across the Western Balkan regions, two workshops will be organized to raise the capacity of sport managers, coaches, and volunteers working within the event management department in grassroots sports organizations. After developing new skill sets, joint actions will take place in the four Balkan countries based on the guidelines developed through initial project activities and research.
In the scope of the project A Self-employment Career Option for Elite Athletes: Innovative Sport-focused Entrepreneurship Bootcamp (ELCAMP), on February 22, EAS organised in Rome two focus groups with the aim to evaluate curriculum for entrepreneurship education.
The purpose of the curriculum is to promote entrepreneurship education through the introduction of entrepreneurial competencies in the curriculum of sports sciences.
The following module titles are covered in this curriculum:
- Entrepreneurial Knowledge
- Entrepreneurial Attitude
- Entrepreneurial Management
- Entrepreneurial Social and Opportunity Making Competence
- SportsTech – Sport Technologies
The focus group participants praised the efforts of the project partners to help empower DC athletes to gain new knowledge in the field of sports entrepreneurship and thus help athletes to enter the labor market more easily.
Focus group participants praised the efforts of project partners – The Collaborative Partnership is coordinated by Collective Innovation AS (Norway) and includes the Hogskolen I Molde (Norway), Olimpijski Komite Slovenije Zdruzenje Sportnih Zvez (Slovenia), Fundacion Universitaria San Antonio (UCAM, Spain) Lietuvos Sporto Universitetas (Lithuania), Mobile Adventure Spolka Z Ograniczona Odpowiedzialnoscia (Poland), and EAS as Partners – to help DC athletes acquire new skills in sports entrepreneurship, making it easier for athletes to enter the job market.
Focus group participants provided some substantive recommendations for further work, which can be summarized in the following recommendations for improving the curriculum:
- Interactive tasks should include scenarios,
- level of knowledge of the participants should be indicated in the entry level.
- a definition of the terms is suggested (i.e. What is self-consciousness?).
- some modules will require more than 8 hours , therefore is recommended to split two moduls into three).
- The order of the modules could be changed in a logical way
- Because arget groups are different in some modules – they must be defined and coherent.
- to specify the Olympic- Paralympic.
- The introduction is perhaps too lengthy, some references are missing.
- Economic and budgetary issues should be made clearer.
The next and final step of the ELCAMP project will take place on March 29 and 30 in Ljubljana, Slovenia, where a piloting seminar and a two-day workshop will be organised, as well as the preparation of the online test.
Bengt Nybelius, together with Risto Keskitalo, the founder of the European Athlete as Student Network (EAS), was a brilliant mind, who settled the objectives and the structure of the organisation in 2004. He passed away in 2011, and EAS decided to establish a scholarship to carry on the legacy of his work. Therefore, we are happy to announce the Call for Paper of the “2023 Bengt Nybelius Scholarship”
Aims of the Bengt Nybelius Scholarship
The aim of the Bengt Nybelius Scholarship is to facilitate the integration of outstanding scholars and young researchers in the area of dual career.
Eligibility to the Bengt Nybelius Scholarship
Regardless the nationality and country of residence, researchers up to 40 years of age could be eligible for the Bengt Nybelius Scholarship.
Requirements to apply to the 2023 Bengt Nybelius Scholarship
Applicants must submit as first author an original manuscript related to the scope of EAS. Manuscripts must not contain information presented in other manuscripts published elsewhere.
The manuscript should be written in English, between 15 and 30 pages double-spaced in Arial font size 11, including title page, abstract, introduction, methods, results, discussion, conclusions, acknowledgments (if applicable), references, tables, figures and legends, and statement of conflicts of interest.
Manuscripts must be accompanied by a cover letter, stating clearly why the work is considered suitable for the Bengt Nybelius Scholarship and explaining the importance of the study.
Selection of the 2023 Bengt Nybelius Scholarship Winner
The Board of EAS will consider the quality of submitted manuscripts and notify the winner by July 31, 2023. The winner has to summarize her/his work with a 15-minute oral presentation in English at the 2023 Annual EAS Conference in Gaeta, Italy, October 2-4.
EAS will arrange travel, accommodation, and registration of the Bengt Nybelius Scholarship winner.

On February 27th the ninth virtual EAS cafè focused on the dual career from the educational and employment perspectives and the human rights of the sportsperson. The event attracted more than 100 participants, including university students from Niš (Serbia). Prof. Antonio Tessitore from the University of Rome Foro Italico moderated the event.
The first speaker, Dr Köle Gjeloshaj (Vice President of the Panathlon Wallonie Brussels, strategic coordinator for the Féderation Wallonie Brussels in the context of the Belgium EU Presidency 2024 in the department of the International Relations, and scientific collaborator of the Université libre de Bruxelles), highlighted the relevance and intriguing nature of the title of the event, particularly in relation to its novelty within the international sport environment.
He focused on the framework and approach of the IOC and other major international sports organizations in relation to the safeguard of human rights, the human resources management, and the dual career support for elite sportspersons (i.e., the IOC/Adecco Athlete365 Career+ programme). In particular, Dr. Gjeloshaj stressed the need to establish a legal framework that should guarantee the rights of elite athletes as workers and/or as students within different parallel and/or transition career trajectories and a lifelong learning perspective. Furthermore, in considering the relevant competencies and skills developed through and during an elite athletic career, the employment sector should further recognize the value of sportspersons as workers, which could also be a concrete action from the corporate social responsibility perspective.
The second speaker, Dr Giovanni Di Cola (Special Adviser at the International Labour Organization, ILO) presented current practices and recommendations in relation to the advancement of decent work in sport. Concrete examples have been presented (i.e., the IOC sustainability strategy; the UEFA sustainability strategy), which highlighted the need to adopt a comprehensive approach to guarantee appropriate and sustainable working policies and conditions in the sport sector. To meet the needs of a complex and rapid development of sport environment, Dr. Di Luca claimed that there is an urgent need for major sports organizations to take actions and accelerate the processes. Major recommendations included the focus on athletes’ working conditions and collective bargaining, the acceleration of sustainability in sport, the reinforcement of dual careers though competencies and skills recognition and development, and the review of traditional models adapting to evolving environments and conditions within the sport sector.
Following the general discussion addressing the main themes discussed during the Cafè, both speakers emphasized the urgent need of a cooperation between organizations for concrete and effective actions accelerating the policy development and implementation processes of the recognition of the rights of elite sportspersons as students and workers,
In closing the event, President Laura Capranica informed that the tenth EAS Cafè will be organized in April/May and that the University of Cassino and Lazio Meridionale will organize the 2023 EAS Conference in Gaeta (Italy). Finally, the President invited young researchers to apply to the Bengt Nybelius Scholarship.
On February 20-22, 2023, for the first time the transnational meeting of the ERASMUS+ Collaborative Partnership “BRAnd Values Alignment through Dual Career (BRAVA-DC, 622824-EPP-1-2020-1-IE-SPO-SCP) was organized in presence. Hosted by the University Roma3 – Italy, and coordinated by the University of Limerick – Ireland, the partners from the University of Ljubljana – Slovenia, the European Platform for Sport Innovation (EPSI) – Belgium, the Elite Sport Academy Aarhus (ESAA) – Denmark, the Human Age Institute Foundation (FHAI) – Italy, the University of Niš – Serbia, the European University Sports Association Institute (EUSA) – Slovenia, and the European Athlete as Student Network – Malta) had the opportunity to share the preliminary findings of the concept mapping for the development of dual career guidelines of the employee-sportspersons (e.g., athletes, coaches, referees, physical trainers, and sports managers).
The concept mapping has been developed based on a literature review and a solid eminence-knowledge encompassing 22 semi-structured interviews, five national focus groups, and a survey with 39 dual career experts validating the clarity of 50 factors aiming to facilitate appropriate Dual Career brand alignment strategies and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) policies.
In the past months, employee-sportspersons, managers at sport and corporate levels, and dual career experts unanimously graded and sorted the final list of 50 factors. After having agreed that the main targets of the guidelines were the employees, the managers, and the policy makers at national and international levels, the BRAVA-DC Team discussed the methodological approach of the qualitative-quantitative data interpretation of the concept mapping, and analyzed preliminary findings. In March the concept mapping data collection will be completed.
In the next two months another face-to-face meeting will be organized in Slovenia to finalize the guidelines and to create a web-based platform dedicated to the employees, employers, and governing bodies.

12:10 – Köle Gjeloshaj, PhD: “Dual career of athletes at the International sports organizations”
Vice-President of the Panathlon Wallonie-Bruxeles, Belgium and strategic coordinator of the president of the European Fair-Play Movement, Scientific Collaborator at the Université Libre de Bruxelles, dr. Gjeloshaj worked from 1996 to 2017 at the International University Sports Federation (FISU), for which he set up the educational and development departments as Director of the Educational department. He joined the International School Sport Federation (ISF) in 2018, where he covered the position of Deputy Secretary General until 2022. He is now a civil servant within the Federation Wallonie Bruxelles as coordinator of the logistical team for the Belgium Presidency of the EU in 2024 of the International Relations Department. Dr. Gjeloshaj was the team leader for FISU of the Proclamation by UNESCO (2015) of the International Day of University Sport. The Co-rapporteur (2021-22) of the High Level Group on Gender Equality in Sport of the European Commission. From 2020 to 2022, he chaired the Consultative Committee of the Enlarged Partial Agreement on Sport of the Council of Europe. He is an alumni of ULB (Political sciences) and the University of Pisa (Anti mafia and corruption).
12:35 – Giovanni Di Cola, PhD: “Rights and obligations and dual career of professional athletes”
Dr. Giovanni Di Cola has a wide experience within the United Nations System, having served in various UN agencies (UNESCO, UNFPA, UNICEF, and ILO) with assignments at the UN Staff College and the UN Secretariat, on matters related to the UN reform, Youth leadership and Sport for Development and Peace. He contributed to establish a network of 150 universities, on local economic development as ILO inter-regional programme (Universitas) coordinator between 2001 and 2008 based in Geneva. Since 2016, he was instrumental in establishing the multistakeholder initiative as Centre for Sport and Human Rights in 2021, to which he ensured that ILO could be represented as founding member and permanent observer. He was lead expert of the ILO Global Forum on Decent work in the world of sport of January 2020, in which the ILO Points of Consensus were adopted.
