Successful project meeting to develop the European Dual Career Toolkit to promote dual careers in top-class sport in “virtual” Hamburg.

On April 21 and 22, 2021 the fifth of a total of six meetings of the partner institutions Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences (AUAS), Talented Athlete Scholarship Scheme (TASS), CREPS Toulouse, Sportlycée Luxembourg (SL), European Athlete as Student (EAS) and the adh (German University Sport Federation), which are strongly supported by TW1N (Project management and consultancy) took place.

The adh as the host, represented by CEO Jörg Förster and project researcher Martin Santelmann, organized and moderated the two-day meeting with the active participation of the Hamburg University Sports Team, which ensured that the breaks were active.

In addition to the presentation and discussion of the dissemination strategy for 2021, the focus was primarily on the presentation and discussion of the results from the previous three-month test phase. This was planned, coordinated and evaluated by the adh in a leading role. 15 tools developed in the areas of “Manage”, “Train” and “Counsel” were checked for their feasibility and applicability by external European stakeholders as well as internal project partners. On the basis of the feedback obtained, the final refinement of the instruments on the European Dual Career Toolkit has now begun. It is already clear that all those involved in the dual career can look forward to the introduction of the toolkit at the end of this year.

That project unites leading European institutions in dual career research and practice, to create the very first European Dual Career Toolkit. The lead is taken by the Amsterdam University of Applied Science, Partners are:

Aim of the project is to develop tailored tools to the specific demand of dual career service providers in the EU member states. Using an integrated approach, STARTING 11 empowers key actors in sport, education and the labour market to provide high quality services to athletes in all stages of their sporting career, reaching from school level to the stage of retirement from sport.

EAS is represented in that project by Prof. Laura Capranica (Foro Italico) and Ole Keldorf (Eliteidraet Scole Aarhus – ESAA). EAS Secretary General, Joerg Foerster, is representing EAS member adh within that project.

The Partners of the Erasmus+ funded project ELCAMP (A Self-employment Career Option for Elite Athletes: Innovative Sport-focused Entrepreneurship Bootcamp) met virtually for a kick-off meeting in March. EAS was represented by dr. Mojca Doupona and dr. Tibor Kozsla.

The ELCAMP project focus to strengthen the skills and competencies of elite and Paralympic athletes on sport-focused entrepreneurship with innovative methods and connecting athletes among themselves and with other people interested in entrepreneurship. The project objectives directly address the target group of EAS. EAS will be actively involved in the pilot implementation phase of the project. EAS will also lead to the dissemination of project outputs both at the athlete’s level and at the level of sports organizations in Europe.

EL CAMP partners are Collective Innovation AS (Norway) in cooperation with European Paralympic Committee (Austria), Fundacion Universitaria San Antonio (Spain), Hogskolen I Molde (Norway), Lietuvos Sporto Universitetas (Lithuania), Olimpijski Komite Slovenije Zdruzenje Sportnih Zvez (Slovenia).

On April 6 the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace is celebrated having a white card as a symbol to emphasize the positive values of sport, which unify individuals regardless of gender, ethnic, social or religious differences.

Despite the Covid-19 pandemic lockdown, the SOS project celebrates the Sports Schools for Development and Peace event (@peaceandsport, @SportOpensSchool, #WhiteCard, #April6, #OnlyTogether) with a video involving students from the Hungarian (Kolcsey Ferenc Gimnazium, Budapest), Italian (IIS Newton Pertini, Camposampietro), Portuguese (Externato Cooperativo da Benedita), and Romanian (Liceum cum Program Sportiv, Bacau) Partner high schools.

Through its involvement in the European ERASMUS+Sport Collaborative Partnership More Than Gold (603346-EPP-1-2018-1-LV-SPO-SCP), EAS contributed to raising awareness on the dual career of athletes during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Thus, a study aimed to investigate the student-athlete’s capability to face the academic, sport, and social challenges during the 2019 lockdown and to disclose novel aspects of dual careers has been published on the prestigious peer-review journal Frontiers in Psychology. Four hundred sixty-seven student-athletes from 11 countries completed an ad-hoc survey. The findings substantiate the relevant role of a dual career in coping with the emergency of the COVID-19 pandemic through home training and e-learning valuable resources. Europe is facing challenging lockdowns to fight the COVID-19 pandemic and all of us are more digital than ever. However, EAS is committed to keep sustaining the dual career of athletes and working hard on forthcoming initiatives, including the Annual Conference 2021 to be held in Lisbon next September. We warmly thank our Members and our co-Partners of ERASMUS+Sports Collaborative Partnerships for their efforts in keeping sustaining the student-athletes through innovative solutions at educational and/or sport levels. In fact, lots of interesting things happened and we will keep you informed through our website (www.dualcareer.eu) and by emails.
  • Recent activities
In agreement with the aims of the Network, in the past months of 2021, EAS carried out several virtual activities:
Support and organize a continuous exchange between institutions and experts across Europe working in the field of dual career.
EAS organized the second online EAS Cafè, which was dedicated to Dual Career Migrating Athletes. This bimonthly opportunity to discuss specific dual career issues has been greatly participated and appreciated. The third event will be organized in April and will focus on the role of media in support of student-athletes.
  • Create skill enhancement opportunities for people who are working in the field of dual career.
EAS participated to the online meetings and activities of the ongoing 2017 (e.g., EMPATIA) and 2018 (e.g., DONA, ED MEDIA, MTG, SoS, and Starting11) and 2020 (e.g., BRAVA-DC, ElCamp; and Para-Limits) Erasmus+ Cooperative Partnerships. From March 2020, the activities were carried on in a virtual modality due to the COVID-19 lockdown. Last February the AMID project submitted its final report, whereas the duration of the projects EMPATIA, DONA, EDMEDIA, MTG, and SoS was extended to the 2021.
  • Build up academic research work in the field of dual career.
In 2021, an update of the contribution of EAS to the European dual career through the ERASMUS+Sport Collaborative Partnerships has been published in the international journal Cultura, Ciencia y Deporte. Furthermore, two scientific manuscripts on the outcomes of the AMID, EMPATIA projects have neem published on the peer-review journalsHuman Movement, and Plos One, respectively. Finally, the outcomes of the MTG project have been presented at the scientific conference ‘Sport for the sustainability of society’ organized online by the University of Latvia.
Create a political environment that addresses the needs of talented athletes pursuing a dual career by cooperating with partners in sport and educational systems.
Fruitful partnerships with the European Commission and the Council of Europe have been consolidated through the participation in relevant events held in online modalities. In the next months EAS will contribute to the revision of the European Sport Charter and to the application to European partnerships.

European Athlete as Student Network
This season the federated teams could only compete for three weekends, and Associació Esportiva Carles Vallbona (Spain) thought of organizing an activity provided by the WOMAN project, which would motivate our players not to lose the desire to continue training and that they could share with professional players their sporting experiences.
On Sunday, February 14th, the children, cadets and youth players met with the two invited players through a video conference. For the children’s category we invited Aina Berbel, a player from Sant Cugat, and for the cadet and youth team she was Maria Segura, the current player of the Spanish national team and Stuttgart (Germany).
They told us curiosities about how they had lived the confinement, if they had trained at home in order to keep fit, if they had passed the COVID, how they are living the fact of traveling to make matches, how many PCRs had to be done, etc. In addition, they told us about their beginnings in volleyball and their careers.
DONA is based on the ERASMUS+ Collaborative Partnership program of EU. It is coordinated by the Associació Esportiva Carles Vallbona (Spain) and involves the Malta Volleyball Association (Malta), the Scuola di Pallavolo Anderlini Soc. Coop. Sociale SD (Italy), Istres Provence Volleyball (France), the De SportMaatschappij Foundation (Netherlands), the University of Ljubljana (Slovenia), and the European Athlete as Student (EAS) Dual Career Network (Malta).
On February 3, 2021, the Catholic University of San Antonio Murcia (UCAM-Spain) organized the virtual kick-off meeting of the ERASMUS+Sport Collaborative partnership “Dual Career of Students-Athletes with Disabilities as a Tool for Social Inclusion – A dual career of athletes – students with disabilities as a tool for social inclusion (Paralimits)” for the promotion of the holistic development of the Paralympic athletes and their social integration into the labour market at the end of their sports career.
In a video recording, Mr. Alejandro Blanco Bravo, President of the Spanish Olympic Committee highlighted the relevance of dual careers in athletes with disabilities and welcomed the Members of the European Athlete as Student Network – Malta, the University of Rome Foro Italico – Italy, the Polytechnic Institute of Viseu – Portugal, the National Physical Education University of Bucharest – Romania, the University of Limerick – Ireland,  the Collective Innovation – Norway, and the European Paralympic Committee.
During its 30-month life span, the Partners of Para-limits will detect the needs and barriers the student-athletes with disabilities in combining their sporting and university commitments. Based on the collected evidence- and eminence-based information the partners will develop a guide to boost the dual career among athletes with disabilities, create an innovative course for the training of university staff as sports mentors specialized in student-athletes with disabilities, and publish a European Handbook to serve as a tool for disseminating the project to other stakeholders.  The work will culminate in the creation of the Observatory on Dual Career, Disability and Sport to continue the achievements made and maintain the positive impact of this model beyond the completion of the project.

Successful Validation of the English and Italian EMPATIA Educational Platform/Website for Parents/Guardians of Elite Athletes as Students

Based on the evidence- (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7581327/) and eminence- (https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0243354) knowledge gathered from Parents/Guardians of Elite Athletes as Students and European Dual Career experts, the EMPATIA platform/website presents in one place crucial information, hints & tips and important documents to empower Parents/Guardians of Dual Career athlete. The content is organized into 4 parts named: WHY, WHAT, HOW & WHERE and is available in English, French, Italian, Portuguese and Slovenian.

At present, 33 Irish and 30 Italian Parents participated in online evaluation workshops and provided their positive feedbacks useful for its implementation. A Parent commented “If this website were available when I was an athlete, I probably wouldn’t have had to choose between continuing my studies and continuing my sport career!! I’m happy for my son!”

In the next weeks, the French, Portuguese, and Slovenian workshops will be organized to finalize the validation and implementation of the website.

Sharing Best practices: UNISPORT ITALIA provides a valuable guide to orient athletes who intend to undertake an academic training in Italy in universities that take into account the European guidelines on the dual career of the athlete.
UNISPORT ITALIA, the network of the Italian national university sports system created in 2018 to enhance the role of sport within the three key missions of the university (training, research and innovation), actively cooperates with EAS in the implementation of the dual career in Italy. UNISPORT ITALIA developed the first shared database on dual career in Italy (https://www.unisport-italia.it/dual-career/) as an important result of the Memorandum of Understanding on dual career with the National Olympic Committee (CONI) and its Athletes Commission.
The UNISPORT ITALIA dual career database not only provides information for athletes willing to pursue a university career in parallel with their sports commitment but offers also national and international visibility to 28 Italian Universities with a dual career programme, stimulating other Universities to start or implement a dual career program.
Data collection was made possible thanks to the contribution of the Sports Delegates of the Italian universities who filled out an electronic questionnaire and the support of the Conference of Italian University Rectors. Thus, the UNISPORT ITALIA website allows to filter the available programme on the basis of the main benefits provided for by the regulations of the individual universities, thus allowing athletes to easily identify the programme most suited to their needs. The mapping will be constantly updated by UNISPORT ITALIA.
Full satisfaction on the part of the President of Unisport Italia, Prof. Paolo Bouquet: “This result demonstrates that the Italian university world is paying more and more attention to the relationship with the world of sports, feeding a virtuous and bidirectional synergy: on the one hand, more and more Italian universities support student-athletes in their difficult path, on the other hand, the world of sport and athletes can help the national university system to carry out its training activities ever better and in innovative forms, research and technology transfer. I wish that this project can give rise to a working table with the Sports Office of the Government, CONI (Italian National Olympic Committee), CUSI (Italian Sport University Centre) and all other stakeholders to define national guidelines to dual career as suggested by the EU, we would be one of the first countries to equip ourselves with a fundamental tool”.

Dear Dual Career Friends and Colleagues,

Indeed, 2020 has been a challenging year affecting our life in many serious ways and obliging all of us to find adjustments to this unexpected crisis. Sport and education have been tremendously pressured, with closed schools and many sports events postponed to the next year. If every crisis brings also an opportunity, EAS decided to focus on the second part of the equation by continuing cooperating with European institutions and experts working in the field of Dual Career.

Whilst the COVID-19 stopped many activities, EAS discovered new ways to grow, connect, and engage its members in the development of a European Dual Career culture. Thanks to the Team of the University of Hamburg, the dual career community participated in the 17th Annual Conference in a virtual modality. Furthermore, since its re-election as a Member of the 2020-2022 Bureau of the Consultative Committee of EPAS – Council of Europe, EAS started cooperating with the International School Sport Federation-ISF (Chair), the European Olympic Committees-EOC (Vice-Chair), the European Network of Sport Education-ENSE, and The Association for International Sport for All-TAFISA.

Our Network participated in several applications to the ERASMUS+ Sport 2020 Call for Collaborative Partnerships on dual career. Three of them have been funded, specifically focusing on brand alignment strategies and corporate social responsibilities policies in Dual Career (BRAVA-DC); self-employment career option for innovative sport-focused entrepreneurship bootcamp (EL-CAMP); and on Dual Career of athletes with disabilities (PARA-LIMITS). Meantime, EAS contributed to the activities of the ongoing projects (AMID, DONA, EdMedia, EMPATIA, More than Gold, SOS, and STARTING 11), mainly through online meetings as a new way to connect. Despite EdMedia, EMPATIA, More than Gold, and SOS were expected to be finalized by December 31, 2020, due to the pandemic their final activities have been postponed to 2021.

As the European Dual Career knowledge-hub, EAS also contributed to the dissemination of knowledge through scientific publications in peer-review journals. Specifically, the activities of the Network have been published on the special issue on Dual Career of the Cultura, Ciencia y Deporte journal, whereas the outcomes of a systematic literature review and focus groups on parenting Dual Career athletes have been published in the Psychology of Sport and Exercise and PlosOne journals, respectively.

To provide further opportunities for continuing the discussion on Dual Career issues, the Network started the new adventure of virtual cafes with experts sharing their stories and visions. This novel experience dedicated to the EAS members was successfully held at the end of November. Surely, it will be consolidated in 2021 with a bimonthly cadence. I would like to invite you to reach out with any topic, thoughts, ideas, or news that help us promote Dual Career.

Whilst the COVID-19 continues to bring sickness and many of us are still isolated, we foresee a new recovered life in 2021 and look forward to meeting you in person next September during the 18th EAS Annual Conference to be organized in Lisbon during the Lisboa 2021-Capital of Sport by ICSTE-Istituto Universitario de Lisboa.
