On May 11-12, 2023 the Talent Team gathered in Palermo, Italy to discuss the outcomes of the desk analysis and best practices report from the participating countries, to participate in the Show your talent event at Regina Margherita high school, to foresee the advancement of the project for the identification of the standards for talented.
TALENT project (101090147) is focused on the integration of youth talents in their school and sports environments through a program that is pre-operational with respect to an actual dual-career programme. With this aim, the “Show your talent!” Event was organized at the Regina Margherita high school in Palermo, with talented students presenting dance, drama, language, music, painting, and sport (taek-won-do) performances. Furthermore, Italian track and field coaches, athletes, teachers, and scholars exchanged their opinions on the difficulty to define the characteristics of a specific talent, to delineate the boundaries and signs for detecting a given talent, and to adopt the proper measures to help youth to expressing their talent.
In the next months, national focus groups will be organized in Italy, Croatia, Bosnia, and Serbia to provide insights from coaches and teachers on how to identify and support a dual career of talented youth. Then, a workshop with European dual career experts will take place during the next EAS Annual Conference to be held in Gaeta, Italy, next October 2-4, 2023

We are pleased to invite you at the 2nd edition of the “International Symposium on Physical Activity and Individuals with Visual Impairments or Deafblindness”, which will be held on June 8-11, 2023, in Parma (Italy).
The conference will deliberate on several issues related to adapted physical activities in children and youths with visual impairments or deafblindness. International experts will share their knowledge and expertise with research sessions, for the most recent scientific based evidence, and with practical sessions, for the demonstration of physical activities and practice. Moreover, round tables with Paralympic athletes and digital technology companies will be delivered to share individual experiences and best practices. In particular, the round table “Paralympic Athletes and Dual Career” will emphasize issues that are considered central for the Dual Career network.
We are intended to disseminate current knowledge and activities and to sensibilize academic and local community on the critical issue of physical activity and social inclusion.

The organizing committees of the ISPAIVID 2023
Europe is going through difficult and disruptive times, with the alarming humanitarian crisis continuing to evolve and COVID-19 pandemic still limiting personal interactions. Indeed, Easter is the time of renewal through considering our real values and appreciating what can enrich our lives. In these exacerbated and disastrous social tensions, sports and education could be examples of collective efforts to recover and look forward a re-start with new strength, humanity, and openness after these calamities. In this framework, EAS is committed to keep sustaining the dual career of sportspersons and working hard on ERASMUS+Sports Collaborative Partnerships and forthcoming initiatives, including the organization of the 2022 Annual Conference and General Assembly to be held in Cartagena, Spain next September 28-30.
Recent activities
Driven by the aims of the Network, in the past months EAS carried out several virtual activities to support a fruitful exchange in dual career between institutions, experts, and policy makers across Europe. In particular, the bimonthly online Cafè were dedicated to “Well-being and mental health for Dual Career athletes at high school level” and “Dual Career service providers”, which had been greatly participated and appreciated. The next Cafè will be organized in May-June and will focus on the paralympic student-athletes.
Create skill enhancement opportunities for people who are working in the field of dual career
The 2017 (e.g., EMPATIA) and 2018 (e.g., DONA, ED MEDIA, MTG, and SoS) Erasmus+ Cooperative Partnerships have been finalized and their outcomes are available at the ERASMUS+PROJECT RESULTS platform (https://erasmus-plus.ec.europa.eu/projects#search/project/keyword=sports%2520opens%2520school&matchAllCountries=false), whereas the STARTING11 Final Conference will be held in Amsterdam next May 12. In addition to online activities of the 2020 BRAVA-DC, Para-limits, and ElCAMP Erasmus+ Cooperative Partnerships, EAS participated to the face-to-face transnational meetings organized in Oslo and in Cartagena for ElCAMP, and in Rome for Para-limits. Furthermore, the Collaborative Partnership COMPATH has been granted 2021 Erasmus+ funds for the next years. Finally, EAS participated to the 2022 call of the Erasmus+Sport.
Build up academic research work in the field of dual career.
This year, a scientific manuscript on the outcomes of the More Than Gold project has been published (https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0264175) and the last paper of the EMPATIA project is currently under revision. To support young researchers in dual career, before July 1st, 2022, applications for the 2022 Bengt Nybelius Scholarship have to be submitted to info@dualcareer.eu, encompassing the curriculum vitae of the first author and his/her original manuscript. The winner will have to summarize her/his work with a 15-minute oral presentation in English at the 2022 Annual EAS Conference in Cartagena, Spain, September 28-30. Create a political environment that addresses the needs of talented athletes pursuing a dual career by cooperating with partners in sport and educational systems
Fruitful partnerships with the European Commission and the Council of Europe have been consolidated through the participation in relevant events held, mainly organized in online modalities. Next May 18, 2022 EAS will participate to the School Sport Forum of the ISF Gymnasiade, to be held in Normandy, France. These activities will consolidate and enhance a political environment that addresses Dual Career issues in sport and educational systems.

On March 19, 2021, the EMPATIA educational platform was presented during the “Reconciling academic career and the competitive sporting commitments: The experimental educational project elite student-athlete” session of the online “Didacta Fair 2021”. This event is the most relevant meeting of the Italian school sector during which teachers, educators, school principals and sector experts participate in training, webinars, workshops, meetings, and updates on the school world (https://fieradidacta.indire.it/it/).
More than 80 regional coordinators, principals, and teachers attended the dual career session coordinated by dr. Paola Deiana from the Italian Ministry of Education (Manager of the Fifth Office – School sports policies). Prof. Federica Pilotti and Prof. Immacolata Messuri illustrated the findings and envisaged further development of the experimental project “sport at high school level”. In presenting the development of the dual career programme at the Sports High School Pacinotti-Archimede of Rome, prof. Paolo Cambone (physical education and sports teacher) highlighted the need to establish a fruitful dialogue between the teachers, the sports staff, and the parents. Thus, prof. Cambone introduced the educational platform of the EMPATIA project (https://edu.empatiasport.eu/it/), co-created and validated also in cooperation with the parents of the student-athletes enrolled at the Sports High School Pacinotti-Archimede of Rome. At the end of the dual career session, Dr. Deiana envisaged cooperation with EAS for the benefit of student-athletes
Successful Validation of the English and Italian EMPATIA Educational Platform/Website for Parents/Guardians of Elite Athletes as Students
Based on the evidence- (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7581327/) and eminence- (https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0243354) knowledge gathered from Parents/Guardians of Elite Athletes as Students and European Dual Career experts, the EMPATIA platform/website presents in one place crucial information, hints & tips and important documents to empower Parents/Guardians of Dual Career athlete. The content is organized into 4 parts named: WHY, WHAT, HOW & WHERE and is available in English, French, Italian, Portuguese and Slovenian.
At present, 33 Irish and 30 Italian Parents participated in online evaluation workshops and provided their positive feedbacks useful for its implementation. A Parent commented “If this website were available when I was an athlete, I probably wouldn’t have had to choose between continuing my studies and continuing my sport career!! I’m happy for my son!”
In the next weeks, the French, Portuguese, and Slovenian workshops will be organized to finalize the validation and implementation of the website.
EU funded ERASMUS+ SPORT Collaborative Partnerships starting in 2021
On October 20, 2020, EACEA published the results of the selected proposals for ERASMUS+ SPORT to be started on January 1, 2021.
Under the EC priority on sports “Promote education in and through sport with special focus on skills development, as well support the implementation of the EU Guidelines on Dual Careers of Athletes” EAS is the partner of three Collaborative Partnerships:
BRAVA-DC: Brand Value Alignment through Dual Career, Coordinated by University of Limerick (Ireland) in cooperation with Aarhus Kommune (Denmark), European Platform for Sports and Innovation (Belgium), EUSA Institute (Slovenia), Faculty of Sport and Physical Education, University of Nis (Serbia), Fondazione Human Age (Italy), Università diegli Studi Roma Tre (Italy), Univerza V Ljubljani (Slovenia), and EAS (Malta). The primary focus of BRAVA-DC is on enhancing the European workplace environment so the circumstances and challenges of dual career athletes and coaches can more effectively be accommodated. The BRAVA-DC project aims are 1) to structure an evidence and eminence knowledge base on dual career for employee-athletes and 2) to define and enable European guidelines which support DC in the workplace and which facilitate appropriate brand alignment strategies and CSR policies which value DC. Accordingly, the overarching aim of the BRAVA-DC project is to implement the EU Guidelines on Dual Careers of Athletes.
EL CAMP: A Self-employment Career Option for Elite Athletes: Innovative Sport-focused Entrepreneurship Bootcamp, coordinated by Collective Innovation AS (Norway) in cooperation with European Paralympic Committee (Austria), Fundacion Universitaria San Antonio (Spain), Hogskolen I Molde (Norway), Lietuvos Sporto Universitetas (Lithuania), Olimpijski Komite Slovenije Zdruzenje Sportnih Zvez (Slovenia). The overall objectives of ELCAMP are to support the implementation of the EU Guidelines Dual Careers of Athletes through the development of a sports-focused entrepreneurship program and to contribute to innovative approaches to sports-focused entrepreneurship through an entrepreneurship boot camp curriculum, training modules, toolkits and learning, mentoring and networking platform in line with talented, elite and retired athletes needs and expectations.
PARA-LIMITS: Dual Career of Student-Athletes with Disabilities as a Tool for Social Inclusion, coordinated by the Fundacion Universitaria San Antonio (Spain) in cooperation with Collective Innovation AS (Norway), European Paralympic Committee (Austria), Fundacion Once Para la Cooperacione Inclusion Social de Personas (Spain), Instituto Politecnico de Viseu (Portugal), Università degli Studi di Roma Foro Italico (Italy), Universitatea Nationala De Educatie Fizica Si Sport Din Bucuresti (Romania), University of Limerick (Ireland) and EAS (Malta). The main objectives are: to detect the needs and barriers athletes-students with disabilities have in combining their sports and university commitments; to adapt the Dual Career model to elite athletes with disabilities for promoting their social integration and for supporting their transition to the labour market at the end of their sports careers; to create an innovative course for university staff to serve as sports mentors for athletes-students with disabilities.
